So Many Books: On Experience, Part Two

5 Important Ways Storytelling Is Different in Books vs. Essays On Experience Summary! Movies. These days, everyone is writing movies. Including novelists. Not screenplays, mind you, but even if you#8217;ve never touched a Celtx program and will never see your story on the big screen, you#8217;re still writing movies. Our society is saturated by visual storytelling. On Work Experience! It#8217;s the cool kid on montaigne essays on experience the block, da boss. Whether we#8217;re talking Hollywood movies, TV shows, or Video on Demandwe#8217;re definitely still talking about the one form of storytelling that has become the most prevalent and powerful in modern entertainment.

Whether you realize it or not, that visual medium is influencing the way you write your books. The #8220;Movie Mindset#8221; of individual, Modern Novelists. When I was little, I told myself stories and called them my #8220;movies.#8221; Those movies, of course, eventually became my books. (One little girl typing away at her ginormous old monstrosity of montaigne on experience, a PC just made more sense than trying to convince Steven Spielberg I was writing the next Raiders of the Lost Ark , you know?) I still see my stories play out in my heads cinematicallycamera pans, slow mo, special effects, the works. And I#8217;m not alone. German Essays On Work Experience! For many of montaigne essays summary, us, stories originate as visuals in our imaginations.

When we sit down to write our books, we#8217;re just doing our best to german on work experience, translate those visuals into descriptive prose that will help readers see the same things. However, the influence of movie culture goes beyond that. The movie industry has created a very specific type of storytelling: faster paced, based on solid story structure, and, of course, emphasizing creative visuals. All of these trends have impacted modern written fiction. Montaigne Essays On Experience! We talk about essay, how books today are different from summary, books of yore, and one of the primary reasons for this is 25 worst analogies, their simultaneous evolution alongside the visual storytelling in the movies. If we compare today#8217;s books with yesterday#8217;s books, we can see that, like movies, they are generally faster-paced, more plot-focused, and more #8220;visual.#8221; Should Storytelling Be Different in Books vs. Movies? Naturally, there are both pros and cons to having written storytelling cop so heavily to visual storytelling. But I tend to think that, overall, the montaigne on experience, novelists#8217; ability to learn from individual rights, their movie-making brethren has been a healthy and productive trend.

For one thing, story structure has long been championed much more stridently by screenwriters than novelists. Summary! For another, the vibrancy and leanness in writing help uk, visual storytelling has lent much to our necessarily windier, lusher written literature. However, it#8217;s also important to montaigne on experience summary, realize books vs. movies remain totally different animals. It#8217;s one thing to learn from visual storytelling and apply useful techniques to our written fiction wherever we can. Indeed, as you#8217;ve likely noticed, I use storytelling examples from movies all the time. I do this for writing help uk, a couple of reasons: 1. Movies are easier for me to remember. (Visual learner, after all.) 2. I watch far more popular movies than I read popular books, so movies tend to montaigne summary, provide more pertinent and far-reaching examples. But keep in mind that however much we novelists may love movies and however much we may be able to writing help uk, learn from them about our own craftwe can#8217;t afford to ignore the strident differences between the forms. Today, let#8217;s consider five of the most prominent differences in books vs. movies. Take note of montaigne on experience summary, them so you can realize both the advantages and individual, limitations of written fiction, and essays on experience summary, also so you can know what movie-centric techniques simply aren#8217;t going to essay about trust, work in your book.

1. Your Book#8217;s Pacing Doesn#8217;t Have to essays, Be as Tight as a Movie#8217;s. August Strindberg Essay! Many readers complain that movie adaptations simply aren#8217;t as good as the beloved books on which they are based. There are many reasons for this, but the most common one is simply that movies are a fraction of the montaigne essays on experience summary, length of books. Writing Help Uk! For example, Victor Hugo#8217;s mammoth classic Les Miserables tops out at over 650,000 words and, according to my Kindle, took me thirty-three hours to read. The latest movie adaptation has a running time of just under three hours. Montaigne On Experience Summary! Necessarily, a movie#8217;s pacing is trust relationship, much tighter than a book#8217;s.

Whole subplots get axed from movie adaptations simply because there isn#8217;t time to explore them. In your book, you#8217;re not constrained by such limitations. Even within the shortest of summary, genre word count expectations, books have the opportunity spend much more time on a story than a movie (or even a mini-series) ever will. Don#8217;t get me wrong here. Tight pacing is good. You can definitely borrow a useful page from your screenwriting brethren and 25 worst essay analogies, learn to cut the fluff. But, at the same time, don#8217;t place upon yourself the montaigne on experience summary, unrealistic expectations of matching a movie#8217;s tight pacing requirements. You#8217;ve got at least six hours with your readers.

Use it. 2. Your Book#8217;s Opening Hook Has to experience, Be Stronger Than a Movie#8217;s. Books and movies are perhaps nowhere more different than in their opening scenes. By the time viewers sit down to watch a movie, they#8217;ve more or less committed to the story. They#8217;re not going to get up and leave the theater unless the movie really stinks halfway in. This allows filmmakers the comparative luxury of crafting leisurely and artistic openingsrunning through the credits, panning the setting to show the essays, stage, then focusing on individual a moment or two of the protagonist#8217;s conflict-less Normal World before getting down to business. Essays On Experience! Often, movies won#8217;t open with their protagonists at all. They start out with prologue-esque scenes, in which the conflict is introduced via the antagonist#8217;s evil plans. For example, almost all of the Marvel movies open this way: Although we certainly do see books (especially thrillers) borrowing this approach from movies, it#8217;s important to realize it simply doesn#8217;t work as well in written fiction. 25 Worst Essay! Readers are not as patient in montaigne essays summary, the beginning as are viewers, which means authors must create stronger, faster hooks that get readers to the heart of both the conflict and the character as quickly as possible. When I argue against prologues in books, I#8217;ve had authors come back with the argument at that #8220;well, my favorite cop show on TV does it like that and look how popular it is!#8221; My response: Yep, it works great for TV , wherein you#8217;ve already got an established, basically captive audiencewho, by the way, doesn#8217;t have to german on work experience, exert any effort to essays, sit there and writing help uk, keep watching for a single hourversus a reader who is likely scanning that first page, looking for montaigne, an excuse to stop reading and move on to a more promising use of his next six (or more) hours.

Before you open your book with a movie-style prologue or antagonist-intro or leisurely characteristic moment, stop and ask yourself if this is really the strongest hook you can present to your readers. Don#8217;t take their readership for granted. Grab them with an implicit question that piques their curiosity, gets them to invest in your protagonist right away, and makes the exemplification, story#8217;s dramatic question clear from the very first chapter. Montaigne Summary! 3. Your Book Will #8220;Tell#8221; More than a Movie. Movies have quite a few advantages over individual books. Their visual nature can often seem more exciting, especially when portraying physical action.

I don#8217;t know about you, but this Messala having passed, the montaigne on experience, Corinthian was the only contestant on writing help uk the Athenian#8217;s right, and to that side the latter tried to turn his broken four; and then; as ill-fortune would have it, the wheel of the montaigne on experience, Byzantine, who was next on the left, struck the tail-piece of his chariot, knocking his feet from in a relationship, under him. There was a crash, a scream of rage and fear, and summary, the unfortunate Cleanthes fell under the hoofs of exemplification, his own steeds: a terrible sight, against essays on experience, which Esther covered her eyes. just doesn#8217;t quite compare with this Thanks to their visual nature, movies are able to literally #8220;show#8221; the essay, story. #8220;Showing#8221; in a book, even in the hands of montaigne on experience, a master author, is still nothing but description. However, this #8220;telling#8221; nature of a book can actually be one of exemplification essay, its chief advantages over a movie. Novels are more interior than movies. Movies show what#8217;s happening on the #8220;outside,#8221; as it were, of its characters. Books show what#8217;s happening on the inside . Authors get to montaigne essays on experience summary, share their characters#8217; very thoughts with readers, and, as a result, the writing help uk, opportunities for characterization are much deeper in montaigne, a book than in a movie. The #8220;interiority#8221; of a novel is arguably its greatest storytelling superiority over movies. August Essay! Take advantage of montaigne summary, it.

Delve deep into the heart of your charactersespecially your POV charactersand create narratives that speak to readers with the august, very voices of the characters themselves. Don#8217;t just show readers what your characters are doing; show them the motivations and montaigne essays on experience summary, machinations occurring within the character. 4. Your Book Will Have Less Subtext Than a Movie. Subtext, however, is arguably easier to accomplish in movies than in books, for the simple reason, stated up there in #1 and #3, that movies leave out a lot more than do books. 25 Worst Analogies! As a result, there are simply more gaps for viewers to fill in when watching a movie than there are for readers reading a book.

When Jason Bourne gives us that tortured look in the movies, we aren#8217;t told what he#8217;s thinking. We have to fill in the gaps for ourselves. On Experience! Books are different. Not only will readers be unable to see the character#8217;s expression (and trying to describe it in an attempt to gain the same effect rarely works), but they will expect to be told what the essay, character is thinking. The principle goes even farther. When in a particular character#8217;s POV, readers need to know what that character knows, which means even details that are obvious from the subtext often have to essays on experience summary, be explained or at least acknowledged. Essay! For example, in my historical/dieselpunk novel Storming , the protagonist#8217;s sister-in-law has the mental capacity of montaigne summary, a child. This is completely obvious from what is strindberg, shown through her actions and dialogue. Readers get it. But because the protagonist knows exactly what happened to essays on experience summary, her, readers need to know as well. Hence, one quick but necessary line of explanation: Aurelia had been stuck in some kind of fairyish dream ever since she’d fallen out relationship of the montaigne summary, haymow when she was twelve.

Unless you#8217;re Ernest Hemingway, you#8217;re going to have to essay trust, be willing to explain more to montaigne essays on experience summary, readers than you would if you were writing a screenplay. However, you have to be careful to 25 worst essay, balance the needed depth and interiority of your narrative with the still important need for subtext. Don#8217;t explain away all your mysteries; avoid on-the-nose narrative as well as dialogue; and seek out the interesting juxtapositions between your character#8217;s thoughts and montaigne, his actions. 5. Your Book Will Have More Options for Sharing Exposition Than Will a Movie. Even movies have to #8220;tell#8221; sometimes. Strindberg Essay! The trick for montaigne, screenwriters, as well as novelists, is figuring out ways to sneak necessary explanationsor #8220;exposition#8221;into the story without being obvious about it. Often, in a movie, dialogue must bear the weight of this burden. Essay Analogies! Unfortunately, this often results in characters telling each other things they already knowthe dreaded #8220;as you know, Bob#8221; trope.

Most screenwriters are clever enough about sneaking in the exposition that viewers hardly notice, but it can still end up being, um, awkward: In all seriousness, novelists can learn a lot from the movies about how to montaigne essays on experience summary, cleverly sneak exposition (aka info dumps) into dialogue. But the great thing about being a novelist is august strindberg, that you don#8217;t have to put all your exposition in the dialogue. You have many other tools at your disposal, including the simplest of all: just tell readers and move on. Montaigne Essays Summary! For example, in german essays on work, my medieval novel Behold the Dawn , readers needed to know why a certain character was in a certain place at montaigne essays on experience summary a certain time. No need for fancy exposition tricks. The narrative flow allows for a quick explanation: A gull shrieked overhead, diving low above the broken walls of rights essay, Jaffa.

After his victory on the plains of Arsuf, King Richard had moved his army here until the essays summary, port city could be repaired enough to act as a supply base. Take advantage of essays, your many opportunities for montaigne summary, grounding readers in necessary facts. You can use dialogue when it makes sense, but you can also dribble the info into the narrative itself. As we talked about above in #4, readers expect to know what the POV character already knows. However, don#8217;t abuse your exposition opportunities either. Narrative info dumps are just as egregious as #8220;as you know, Bob#8221; dialogue exposition. I, for one, am ecstatic I get to live in a world where I can enjoy stories told through a myriad of different media. I love books and movies for many of the same reasonsbut I also love them for totally different reasons. As a novelist, you can observe and learn from the skillful techniques of individual essay, your movie-making brethren. But don#8217;t forget that your own craft is unique and powerful in its own requirements. Time to go out there and write the kind of book that will keep readers out of the theatersuntil the day its adaptation debuts, of course.

Wordplayers, tell me your opinion? What have I missed in this post? What are other differences you can think between books vs. movies? Tell me in the comments! Sign up to receive K.M. Montaigne Summary! Weiland#8217;s monthly e-letter and strindberg essay, receive her free e-book Crafting Unforgettable Characters: A Hands-On Introduction to Bringing Your Characters to Life . K.M. Weiland lives in make-believe worlds, talks to imaginary friends, and survives primarily on chocolate truffles and espresso. She is the IPPY and NIEA Award-winning and montaigne essays on experience, internationally published author of the Amazon bestsellers Outlining Your Novel and Structuring Your Novel . She writes historical and speculative fiction from her home in western Nebraska and mentors authors on august her award-winning website. It#8217;s good to compare the different mediums of montaigne essays summary, storytelling. Most of us are probably influenced by movies. Some more than others.

I definitely watched way more television/movies growing up, with some influence from comic books. Being also a visual learner I#8217;m sure that#8217;ll have profound effects on about trust my writing. As far as sheer entertainment, movies are more expensive and short lived. Montaigne Essays! Whereas novels extend much longer having a deeper affect on the reader. That#8217;s a plus in the entertainment department. Movies of course, are more visually stimulating. But books have a more calming, lingering affect which I totally appreciate. Yay books! I#8217;ve been ruined somewhat by the movie culture. It#8217;s been seared into my thought pattern influencing impatience with my reading. Essay Trust In A! But now I#8217;m getting used to the pacing of books ? having the opportunity to montaigne on experience, be more invested in writing help uk, the characters.

I love the visuals you provided. The two burgers were cute. #8220;Where#8217;s the beef?#8221; Remember that commercial? The iceberg contrast was great. If movies demonstrate the tip, then we need to become the #8220;berg novelist#8221;. Much like a deep sea diving iceberg tour. I do think there#8217;s something to on experience, the idea of being an #8220;experienced reader.#8221; I#8217;ve noticed among people I know that those who are not frequent fiction readers have more trouble getting into and understanding stories that #8220;experienced#8221; readers have no problem with. This is something to be aware of as a writer. Who are you writing for?

Experienced readers or inexperienced readers? How you approach the story may be affected by essay, the answer. Summary! Another interesting thing I#8217;ve been noticing lately is exemplification, how my tendency to montaigne on experience summary, visualize my stories actually hurts my POVs. Essay! Even though I can vividly picture my stories (as you described), this often leads to my character POVs feeling more distantnot deep enough. For a while, I suppose I bought into essays, the idea that if I could *see* the story in real-time, readers would feel that way, too. But not so. Rights Essay! I#8217;ve gotta get inside their heads and see what *they#8217;re* living. (And in that regard, writing is more like watching a 4-D virtual reality movie than anything. ;)) Yes! This is montaigne essays on experience summary, a great point and definitely something I#8217;ve observed in writing help uk, my own drafts as well. When we end up concentrating *too* much on trying to evoke the visuals, we often miss out on the deeper opportunities of summary, evoking the character#8217;s inner thoughts and emotions.

I mentioned recently in another thread about strindberg, my being able to avoid info dumps by on experience summary, visualizing the scene. I#8217;m not relying on recreating the visuals, but in telling the story as the POV sees it, getting the correct sequences and essay, actions/reactions, dropping in info along the way. I would agree with this. Being able to see exactly what my characters are doing and the scene in montaigne essays summary, which they are doing it is strindberg, much like a movie, but when it comes to putting it down on paper I find I need to have a connection with the character that only a properly constructed character sketch can provide. I find this to be true whether writing a novel or a screen play.

Its is essays, not enough to know what a character is doing, I have to know why they are doing it. This is the only way to writing help uk, keep the story ringing true. Authors, I believe, experienced writers block for essays on experience, only two reasons. 1) The story has gotten off track. 2) The character is not authentic. Both these issues result from a character sketch that has not been fully developed. Character drives plot and experience, Writer must fully understand character so the plot develops in the proper way. Apply this to a proper Structure framework and the story will be able to stand on it#8217;s own. How do you know when the character sketch is complete? You#8217;re able to write a story the rings true with characters speaking, thinking and behaving authentically. How do you fix you story gone wrong?

Put your story away for now. Work on your character sketch until you feel you go it down. Then re-read your story. Since you know your character better now, you will be able to spot where it went wrong. Start your re-write there. On Experience! I#8217;ve seen this trend in essay analogies, YA fiction almost to the extreme. Eoin Colfer seems to be the worst. Montaigne Summary! I#8217;m wondering if: A. Everyone is hoping their YA novel will get picked for the next blockbuster breakaway movie hit complete with merchandising deals. (Hit or miss when we compare the Percy Jackson series in theaters with the Hunger Games.) So they structure it for quick translation to screenplay. B. The expectation is that the readers need to visualize the written medium as a movie in writing help uk, their heads and can#8217;t handle real literature.

Louis Sachar is the opposite and writes glorious prose that doesn#8217;t always translate well to film. I can#8217;t see The Card Turner making it to the big screen for instance. Popular writers may feel they must write in this style in essays on experience summary, order to be read. C. YA writers grew up in a cinematic universe and see this as the exemplification essay, #8220;natural#8221; way to tell stories. Few are writing books like Life of Pi or Ender#8217;s Game where you get to the closing scenes and essays summary, the change the way you look at the whole novel. In movies like The Sixth Sense or The Usual Suspects, the ending feels almost like a gimmick while in books, the essay, non-obvious is part of the attraction.

And maybe it#8217;s D. All of the above. I think all of these probably play a role to some extent, especially the third one. For the most part, YA is designed to be light and essays on experience summary, fast. That#8217;s just the way it#8217;s written. That isn#8217;t necessarily a bad thing, as far as it goes, but it doesn#8217;t mean *all* stories need to be written that way. Individual Rights Essay! Yet another reason for authors to understand the genres they#8217;re wanting to write. Montaigne Essays Summary! Quite an extensive roundup of strindberg, points, all well put and colorful. Summary! (And not just for taking an easy shot at mitochloriansJason Bourne#8217;s face does make his point.) What fascinates me is the idea that movies#8217; openings have *more* leeway than books#8217; do. We normally think of the #8220;Hollywood opening#8221; that rushes into an explosion#8230; but there are some hidden points in that. Essay! The more ambitious filmmakers have no problem using a slower opening, and the rest may be trying to quick-satisfy movie executives who hate slowness (#8220;I#8217;m going for essays on experience, popcorn!#8221; is the rights essay, industry putdown) rather than think the story itself needs it. And as you said, those movies openings are often prologues, ways to montaigne, isolate one colorful piece of the plot even if it isn#8217;t as closely connected to the storythrowaway scenes, sometimes.

So the exemplification essay, key may be that a book#8217;s first chance to hold a reader may not have time to on experience summary, show a separate character or plot thread; we do better by using a good scene that is clearly, obviously about what and individual rights essay, who is at the center of essays on experience, it all. Show we can deliver *everything* in one package right from the start. (Plus, we can#8217;t assume that the august, flashiest scene will be best, in a medium that doesn#8217;t do flash justice#8230; and essays on experience summary, does do layers well.) I#8217;ve blogged in defense of strindberg essay, prologues before, if they#8217;re done *very* carefully. But this makes me wonder if the whole idea of separating the first scene that far might be an unnecessary risk in a book. I#8217;ll have to give it some thought. Most of the #8220;prologue#8221; scenes I#8217;ve enjoyed in movies are ones I don#8217;t think I would have appreciated nearly so much in a book. As a reader, my initial focus upon beginning a new story is alwaysget to the point, get to the protagonist. In a movie though, I#8217;m much more patient, as long as the scene is entertaining. I was actually thinking about on experience summary, this last night while I was rewatching the first episode of Foyle#8217;s War. Instead of starting by introducing Foyle, one of my favorite characters ever, the episode starts with a sort of prologue.

I remembered why I started watching it one day and couldn#8217;t get into german, it, and didn#8217;t come back to montaigne essays on experience, it until months later. But the essay, moment Foyle walked on the screen, I was hooked #8212; and not even by any kind of obvious narrative question or mystery. I wish I could figure out how to montaigne on experience summary, do that! But, as you say, if the best thing about your story is your main character, or a setting, or whatever, it#8217;s very, very risky to start with something else. . . Essay About Trust! Michael Kitchen is brilliant in that series. So brilliant!

I am going to marry Foyle. This is so much in line with what I#8217;ve thought before, but much clearer and more developed. I like to see novels doing the kinds of things only novels can do #8212; allowing a reader to experience from the inside what it is like to essays on experience summary, be someone else. For all the flashy things movies can do that books can#8217;t, I don#8217;t think any movie can really get inside a character the way a novel can. 25 Worst Analogies! On the other hand, a movie can get away with thin characterization and essays on experience summary, cliched plots if the visuals are impressive enough, but a book can never do this. Movies can be absorbing based primarily on style and visuals, but no amount of essay, stunning setting description will get me immersed in a story if the narrative stuff isn#8217;t there. And no matter how unique or stylish the montaigne essays summary, setting are in the writer#8217;s head, no matter how graceful or spectacular the action moves, even the writing help uk, best writer cannot convey that directly to me in the way a filmmaker can. I agree.

There#8217;s much novelists can learn from the movies, but at the end of the day, we have to realize we#8217;re writing a book, not a movieand take advantage of that fact instead of trying to work around it. Absolutely! This is one of my favorite posts ever, actually. Well, cool beans. #128521; An excellent post for many reasons, but these are my two favourite moments: • Use of the word “ interiority”. • The midichlorian clip! Thank you kindly. Hah.

I laughed so hard when I found that midichlorian clip. It made my week. #128521; One interesting thing that I realized while watching explosion-filled blockbusters is that movies are actually more subtle than books. If a director wants to montaigne on experience, hint at something, they need only put a prop in the background and film the scene as if the prop wasn#8217;t even there. I believe Star Trek Into Darkness did this by strindberg essay, including a model of the Vengeance at the end of a line of other Star Fleet models in either Pike#8217;s or Marcus#8217;s office. You can watch the scene a hundred times and there is nothing pointing you to on experience summary, look at that final ship. Do the same thing in a book, and you have to put at least a sentence there, which, as brief as it may be, still shines a spotlight on that detail that shouts #8220;Look at essay me! I#8217;m important!#8221; Movies surprise me all the time. The only essays summary times books have surprised me is when they have fallen down on foreshadowing or the setup.

Yes, misdirection and foreshadowing are often easier in movies, since, unlike in book, there doesn#8217;t need to be a blatant reference. Also, the writing help uk, fact that readers usually need to be up to speed with whatever the narrating character knows means that a lot of opportunities for reveals are lost. I have limited time today, so this has to be short#8230;. but this is soooo fantastic and helpful and spot-on! I was grinning all the way through it. (Heehee. And I LOVED your ending. Essays! So encouraging. ;D) That#8217;s great! Glad to hear it was usefuland entertaining. #128521; I like to individual essay, submit the only instance where I actually found the movie to be better than the book, #8220;Jaws#8221; by Peter Benchley.

Maybe it was because I saw the montaigne essays summary, film before I read the book or because I was 14 at the time I read it but half way through the book, the story expands into the affair between Sheriff Brody#8217;s wife and the Oceanographer. I found myself checking the title of the book to make sure I was still reading about a shark. On another note, while I would love either of writing help uk, my books to be made into films, I would worry if the BBC made a film about my second book. The BBC have a fear of showing extreme violence so when my protagonist shoots up the school, the BBC would only show a frontal shot of him doing so and maybe a second at on experience the end when he puts the pistol to essay, his head. I (and readers agree) believe that the shooting should be seen in all its brutality. Montaigne! I have a tendency to like whichever versionbook or movieI see first. Patrick O#8217;Brian has become one of my favorite authors. I first stumbled on him because of the movie adaptation of his Master and Commander , and interestingly enough, I *hated* his books when I started reading them afterwards. They didn#8217;t measure up to the movie at all. But kind friends urged me to keep reading. I#8217;m incredibly glad I did, because the essay, iceberg under the water of essays summary, that particular series has become one of the biggest blessings in my reading life.

80smetalman, I totally agree with you in regards to some movies being better than books. Of course, it does depend on the person. Writing Help Uk! Another good example (great example for #8220;Jaws#8221; btw) are the Bourne books (or at least the first one). Without going into great explanation as to montaigne on experience summary, why, it#8217;s obvious once you start reading that the writer behind #8220;The Bourne Identity,#8221; is ridiculously talented at august strindberg essay taking a story from the book that has so much added fluff, and montaigne essays on experience summary, boils it down to a string of events that are taut and moving. Case in point: writing a great book adaptation is 25 worst, borderline genius. I totally agree with you on that. I enjoyed the films so I#8217;m going to have to read the Bourne books.

Yes, yes, yes! I have *so* much love for the Bourne movies. But the books are just#8230; disappointing. I think a large measure of montaigne summary, this is that the nearly-silent-but-always-expressive presence Matt Damon brings to the character creates so much subtext that just isn#8217;t there in the books. I almost can#8217;t believe I#8217;m saying this, but I actually think the 1994 Sense Sensibility with Emma Thompson is better than the book. I think Emma Thompson#8217;s screenplay incorporates a lot of little jokes that Austen would have liked, the kind of thing she would have included if she#8217;d written it a little later. I#8217;ve seen it a million times, because I often don#8217;t like watching movies I haven#8217;t seen before. I gotta throw in a vote for the more recent BBC miniseries. It#8217;s always been my favorite adaptation of Sense and Sensibility . Yes! That one is also very, very good.

And I like that it#8217;s much longer than the #8217;90s version. Wow, I didn#8217;t realize that there were so many people out there who have found certain films better than the book. Essay! Most people will say they enjoyed the book more. I don#8217;t know if this should count as well but I preferred the movie Rollerball to the short story Rollerball Murder. I#8217;ve found that I prefer Philip K. Dick in cinema far more than in print. His writing style makes me wince. I much prefer what cinematographers do with his ideas. I grew up as Televisions were becoming common in UK households, so my main source of entertainments were books and montaigne, my imagination.

I prefer a book to a movies while my son, 35 years old, prefers movies. Sign of the passing of essay, time and the #8216;quick fix#8217; many get from movies, the on experience, urge for instant gratification. August Essay! There was so much missed out from Tolkien#8217;s Lord of The Rings, that I was looking forward to seeing that never appeared in the movies, such as Tom Bombadil and his wife Goldberry. I still prefer the on experience, book to the movies and exemplification essay, am re-reading The Hobbit before I watch the movies. As you so rightly say, books portray, to me, more depth, especially related to characters. This is funny because I write screenplays. I found this post very insightful. I would say that a script is distilled. Montaigne Essays Summary! You obviously can#8217;t waste words in a novel, but you REALLY can#8217;t in a script. Every scene moves the story and develops character and adds subtext etc, all simultaneously. And losing interiority makes it very hard to convey a character#8217;s mind state.

Great post, as always and go novelists! That#8217;s good to hear! I *don#8217;t* write screenplays (although, of exemplification essay, course, I#8217;m a major movie buff) so I wondered how a screenwriter would react to my thoughts here. Thanks for chiming in! Your example of the chariot action scene is perfect. Sometimes, films can just show so much more. Montaigne Essays On Experience Summary! For me, the strindberg essay, biggest advantage films have over montaigne on experience books is the music. Music can evoke so much emotion (sadness, faster heart beat with pounding drums, exciting music, scary music to essay in a, make the viewer anticipate something is about to JUMP out the essays, possibilities are endless) for people where in a book we have a much harder job to do to get our reader to feel emotions. It is a fun challenge though! I appreciate your point that what works in exemplification essay, a film or show doesn#8217;t always work in a book. As you said, people don#8217;t often just walk out of a movie.

They are already there with popcorn in hand; ready to be mesmerized. I think I#8217;ve walked out of maybe 3-4 movies ever (far more turned off at home). They can grab the viewer with stunning visuals and music and they viewers are just more patient. Again, this is a good challenge for us! Thanks for the great advice! Although, to be fair, the montaigne summary, way Ben-Hur #8216;s chariot race was written back when wouldn#8217;t likely make it past a good editor today. German Essays Experience! #128521; Even though I#8217;ve never read the book, and montaigne summary, hadn#8217;t seen the essay, movie for montaigne summary, somewhat over 40 years, I knew it was Ben-Hur!

A nice roundup of points regarding these two mediums, if I don#8217;t say so myself! For all the brain power I can currently summon (it#8217;s very late and I#8217;m half asleep), nothing comes to mind as far as differences between the two mediums. Oh wait, I JUST thought of one#8230; While this point probably doesn#8217;t really matter since all we care about as consumers is the end product but I thought it interesting that before movies become images on a screen, they#8217;re subjected to extreme prejudice. That which, I#8217;m not sure a novel goes through unless by your editor (in which case, you should be thankful God invented those kind folk!). While books can be self-published these days, and essay analogies, it seems like there are many ways to get your book #8220;out there#8221; to the general public, it#8217;s not really the same for a writer of movies (note I say *writer*, and not *filmmaker*). For the writer of movies, especially one who wants to make a living at it, you usually only get one chance per work, to make the montaigne on experience, right impression: readers in Hollywood generally know within the first 5 pages whether or not they will #8216;pass,#8217; or #8216;recommend#8217; to essays on work experience, the higher-up at a studio. This of montaigne on experience summary, course, if the screenplay was even good enough to get into essay, the hands of montaigne essays on experience, a studio in the first place! As a screenwriter, the major pressure is on to bring the intensity and unique experience that the only the FEEL of a movie can bring.

All of this with using as few words as possible. It#8217;s kinda like drilling a mine for about in a relationship, the diamond of sentences. Montaigne On Experience Summary! Now do that 800 more times! I complain to myself about this often: #8220;#8230;but I want to write long flowing paragraphs like a novelist and trust relationship, get into the character#8217;s mindset, and I want to use many different POV#8217;s#8230;#8221; But it gets me nowhere. :-/ The difference then is that novelists have more latitude for writing words down in different ways, where the essays on experience summary, screenwriter writes in as few words as possible (always in writing help uk, the present tense), and to essays, make the greatest impact with those words. Oh and on a side note: one reason I#8217;ve really enjoyed dramatic TV shows is essay, I#8217;m able to get behind (or under the ice, as in your example) the characters and really create an investment in them (similar to montaigne on experience, a novel).

For me, dramatic TV shows are basically the novels of the visual medium world#8230; also why TV is totally beating out movies as a whole these days. People WANT TO INVEST IN CHARACTERS! Then, when my eyes hurt from staring at a screen, I can pick up that novel I#8217;ve been working on for the past few months and get lost in writing help uk, its uniqueness that the visual world can no longer give me. I was talking to someone about the state of essays on experience, visual storytelling these days, and he made a really good observation about writing help uk, how it seems like the montaigne on experience, truly gritty, daring, deep storytelling is moving more and more toward television or streaming, where there#8217;s not only the time and space to really develop storylines and exemplification essay, characters, but also more freedom away from the grueling pressures of the box office. That person is absolutely right! And a great point in, #8220;more toward television or streaming..#8221; Streaming outlets has really expanded and multiplied the amount of montaigne on experience, venues one can use to get their work out exemplification there. Whether movie or TV show. But especially TV in essays summary, this day and age. Almost all of my most memorable viewing experiences in the last 10 years come from TV shows#8230;.crazy! I think, particularly in streaming, there#8217;s a lot more leeway for writers and individual rights, directors to experiment.

They don#8217;t have to montaigne on experience summary, play it as safe, which opens up the strindberg essay, whole range of storytelling tools and opportunities for them. Montaigne Essays Summary! Absolutely. You hit the nail on the head. Exemplification Essay! I know you#8217;re a Marvel film fan, but I#8217;ve enjoyed the story telling and character development much more on #8220;Agents of SHIELD#8221; where they have 15 hours a season, as opposed to the 2 or 2 1/2 they get in each film. The films usually have to focus in on a specific plot point. Ultron was disappointing, but I am looking forward to Civil War.

I think that a written story can condense information including backstory in a way a movie cannot. In #8220;The Warrior Prophet#8221;, R. Scott Bakker manages to tell weeks of a crusade in three thrilling pages. In fact, he does so by montaigne on experience, throwing in experience, a number of extremly short grisly scenes, a succession of terror. Each #8220;scene#8221; is one to three phrases long and gut-wrenching. This could be done in a movie, too, but Bakker#8217;s tone of voice, the essays summary, choosing of the words, greatly adds to the effect. In English, I can use the words #8220;guts#8221;, #8220;bowels#8221; or #8220;intestines#8221; for the same object but each of 25 worst analogies, them has a different feel. I guess it makes a difference whether someone is essays on experience summary, #8220;eviscerated#8221; or #8220;gutted#8221;.

Written language has a tone and by the choice of words I can give a scene a sort of subtext. It makes a difference whe?ther someone #8220;makes love#8221;, #8220;fornicates#8221;, #8220;couples#8221; or #8220;f***s#8221; although it is the same act. Great point. In a movie, backstory like this is essay about relationship, another excised (which *does* present interesting opportunities for montaigne essays, subtext) or given full-on attention through #8220;prologue#8221; dramatization. Having worked, briefly, in the TV/movie industry, I find myself using some of the techniques that I picked up. But I have to remind myself about the differences before I stray.

So thanks for the invaluable pointers including extracts from strindberg essay, you own books. Having read those, I can see exactly what you mean. (Although I#8217;m only part of the way through #8220;Storming#8221; at scene where Aurelia has a fit#8230;) Yes, no subtext about Aurelia needed for that scene. :p. I used to write my books more or less so that they could be easily adapted as movies. Then I realized #8230; wait a minute. Movies are very limited in a lot of ways (especially getting into the heads of the characters) and montaigne summary, I was limiting myself by doing that.

Nowadays, I don#8217;t really care if my book ever gets adapted into a movie. I write *a book*. If it ever gets turned into a movie, great. About Trust In A Relationship! If not, the montaigne on experience, book will still stand on its own merits and not on strindberg the hope of getting a movie deal. Essays On Experience Summary! As much as I would love to see one of my stories as a movie (of course!), I#8217;m *so* glad I get to write books instead of make movies. My inner control freak would definitely freak out 25 worst essay if it had to share creative license with a production crew! I lie it the way that Cormac M#8217;Carthy has written many of montaigne on experience summary, his greatest books in the style of a screen play.

I think that books and film complement each other in the way they take us to essays experience, places we would otherwise never see, make us feel things we might not otherwise feel and uplift our spirits with hope for a new tomorrow. McCarthy is an interesting study, in that he#8217;s both so sparse and so opulent in his prose. He#8217;s built to accommodate both media well. One difference I notice is that movies have much more compressed timelines than books. It#8217;s easy to put time skips in a book to make time pass in montaigne on experience, a realistic fashion (ie, key events don#8217;t necessarily happen immediately one after another), whereas in movies, it#8217;s more important to keep up the pacing and flow by having each event lead immediately into the next. For instance, in Lord of the august essay, Rings the book, seventeen years pass between when Bilbo gives Frodo the ring and when Frodo leaves on his quest. In the movie, it#8217;s maybe a few weeks. Essays Summary! The book is more concerned with realism and logic (what are the essays on work experience, odds that Sauron would happen to start looking for the ring at the exact time Bilbo gave it to Frodo?) and the movie is montaigne on experience summary, more concerned with pacing and narrative economy. In some instances, this is actually something authors can learn from.

Sequential gaps in a book are much more forgivable than in a movie, but we should always be careful in making certain those gaps are actually necessary. Readers will benefit from writing help uk, tight pacing just as viewers well, and little is on experience summary, usually lost in the tightening. #8220;For many of us, stories originate as visuals in essay, our imaginations.#8221; I love this statement and it points to something that#8217;s extremely fascinating to essays summary, me. Rights Essay! The imagination. According to Einstein, the true measure of intelligence is not one#8217;s knowledge, but his imagination. This statement boggles me every time I hear it.

Imagination is very mysterious in my opinion. I#8217;m very curious as to how today#8217;s culture of #8220;visual storytelling#8221; has affected the on experience summary, imaginations of writers. Imagination by definition is to form a mental image of german essays on work experience, something in the mind. Which is definitely influenced by montaigne on experience summary, what we#8217;ve experienced of reality. Substantianing the different mediums such as movies, books, comics etc feed our imaginative brains. I know we#8217;re discussing the differences of the two mediums, but I can#8217;t help but ponder on about in a this subject.

The imagination of writers is essays on experience summary, off the charts! Katie you said you#8217;ve been reading the writing help uk, classics. I wonder how much, or if at all their writing was influenced by essays summary, visual storytelling. I know that Dracula and Frankenstein were both written way before TV was invented and their writings are still popular. German Experience! Awesome! I still enjoy the breakdown of the movie structure and storytelling. But it would be great to hear more about the differences of the two mediums. Visualizing it is one thing, but crafting that image into a compelling story is another. Dickens, in montaigne, particular, is very visually vivid. His descriptions of characters is second to none, IMO. The description of villain Bradley Headstone, from Our Mutual Friend , has been one of the most vivid character descriptions of all time for me.

Glad you enjoyed the 25 worst essay, post! Excellent blog! I laughed when I saw the burgers picture. Montaigne! It was hilarious, but a good comparison. I#8217;ve also heard that some movies aren#8217;t as good as the august strindberg, books, and from the few I#8217;ve seen, I found this to be true. In all honesty, for me, my experience with books vs. movies usually comes down to whichever I#8217;ve experienced first. Montaigne Summary! As I mentioned elsewhere in exemplification essay, the comments, one of montaigne essays, my favorite book series is Patrick O#8217;Brians Aubrey/Maturin seriesbut I loathed it at first, because I had seen and individual rights, enjoyed the movie first. This booktuber does a great review of books vs movies!

Love her editing style and essays summary, intro video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AhtoHKF-WUg. Sounds fun! Thanks for sharing! Great post I have been feeling guilty about constantly visualizing my story on the screen. I think it could be because we live in a film-saturated world#8230; Don#8217;t feel guilty! Just use your powers of about trust in a relationship, visualization to bring the story to life in your readers#8217; imaginations as well. Montaigne Essays! Great blog post! I really love that picture of the glacier in the water because that is exactly what it#8217;s like! I feel like movies only essay really scratch the surface of what happens in the book, without giving the viewers the real views of the characters.

In books, we know what the character is thinking at all times and in movies, their thoughts could be misinterpreted by viewers. Now I#8217;m hungry for Wendy#8217;s burgers. All good points here, especially about the opportunities novels give us to supply the interior processing movies don#8217;t allow. I tend to montaigne on experience, overnarrate then cut a lot in subsequent draft, but usually that#8217;s to german essays, cut away what to me at the time of drafting that specific patch of narrative was important to unearth, but which later when revisiting the scene with fresh perspective I realize it#8217;s obvious or not important. Essays Summary! Just as knowing what to show in the time reel of a movie is critical, the #8220;reader tape#8221; is playing in the form of writing help uk, reader interest, on every single page, and it#8217;s critical to montaigne essays summary, provide the august strindberg, right things. I would agree with this. I#8217;m writing a TV screenplay right now for a potential novel later. What I#8217;m discovering is due to the constraints of the screenplay, I have to really focus on the motivations the on experience summary, characters have for what they are saying and doing in the story.

The result is a very tightly written story. Maybe going forward, I should utilize this method before I write the german experience, novel. If nothing else it would provide a solid outline from which to work. [#8230;] Weiland shares five important ways storytelling differs between novels and movies. Later in the week, she posted about hacking readers brains by using all five senses in your [#8230;] [#8230;] representation, our stories have to wow like never before. Montaigne On Experience & Defecation: Essay --- Jacob Glover

Child Not Doing Homework? Read This Before You Try Anything Else. (This article is part of the Be Positive series. Montaigne Essays On Experience? Get free article updates here.) With less than an hour to go before my seven-year-old daughter’s bedtime, my home was a long way from being the oasis of calm I was hoping for at that time of evening. Instead Lily had just scribbled all over her homework worksheet, thrown her pencil on the floor and was now yelling at the top of her voice: ‘ I hate Math. I suck at essay about trust it. Montaigne On Experience? ’ With my younger daughter to put to bed, Lily in a melt-down and me exhausted after a day at work, the tension was rapidly rising.

But even if I could calm ourselves down, there was no end in sight. Even if I could persuade her to finish her math homework, Lily still had the whole book reading to do. So I was facing two choices – Should I stand over her and rights, insist that not doing homework was NOT an option? Or, should I tell her to put the books away, write a note to montaigne her teacher and just let her unwind and play in strindberg essay the lead-up to bedtime? Have you been there?

What choice would you make? The choice I would make now is montaigne essays summary very different to what my choice would have been a few years back. Back then, I’d try to push through with a mixture of essay analogies, cajoling and prompting and assurances that she did know how to do her Math really . If that didn’t work then maybe in despair and frustration that she didn’t seem to want to try, I would have got angry and tried to explain how serious I was about this. Like every parent, I had started out assuming I was simply doing the very best for summary my child by making sure her work was as good as it could be. After all, what choice did I have? From the very early days in the private nursery she attended, I found myself surrounded by lots of other mothers locked into exemplification, the same race to make their children the brightest and montaigne summary, the best.

As Lily got older, I came to learn how insidiously contagious pushy parenting is. If one of the mothers spotted another a parent with a Kumon Math folder, we all rushed to sign up too – for fear our children would get left behind. Neurosis underpinned every conversation at the school gates – particularly as all of us were aiming to get our children into a small handful of selective private schools in the area. Bit by bit, the parenting journey which had started off being so exciting and rewarding, was turning into essays experience, a stressful game of one-upmanship. But children are not products to be developed and put on show to reflect well on us. Depending on what happens on the night, every child is conceived with a unique combination of genes which also maps out their strengths, weaknesses and personality traits before they are even born. Lily may have been bred into montaigne essays summary, a competitive hotbed. But as an innately modest and sensitive child, she decided she did not want to play. The alarm bells started ringing in Grade Three when, after I personally made sure she turned in the best Space project, she won the prize.

While I applauded uproariously from the about trust, sidelines, Lily, then seven, fled the room in tears and refused to essays on experience summary accept the book token from the Head. When she calmed down, she explained she hated us making a fuss. Essay About Trust? But what is summary just as likely is that she disliked the fact that her successes had become as much ours as hers. Even at that young age, no doubt she also realized that the more she succeeded, the more pressure she would be under to keep it up. Over the next few years, the issues only deepened.

The Problem of Not Doing Homework. Slowly, Lily started to find excuses for not doing homework. Our home started to become a battlefield. She would barely open her books before yelling: “ I’m stuck ” –when really she was just terrified of exemplification, getting it wrong. The increasing amounts of homework sent home by the school gradually turned our house into essays on experience summary, a war zone – with me as the drill sergeant.

Homework is one of the most common flash points between kids and parents – the individual rights, crossroads at which academic endeavors meet parental expectations at close quarters – and behind closed doors. Surveys have found that homework is the single biggest source of friction between children and parents. Montaigne Essays Summary? One survey found that forty per cent of kids say they have cried during rows over it. Even that figure seems like a dramatic underestimate. Yet more and more, it is recognized that homework undermines family time and eats into hours that should be spent on play or leisure. A straightforward piece of work that would take a child twenty minutes at school can easily take four times as long at home with all the distractions and delaying tactics that go with it. As a result, children get less sleep, go to bed later and feel more stressed. Homework has even started to analogies take over the summer vacations. Once the long break was seen as a chance for children to have adventures, discover themselves and explore nature.

Now the summer months are viewed as an extension of the on experience, academic year – a chance for kids to catch up… or get ahead with workbooks and tutoring. But ultimately homework abides by the law of diminishing returns. Researchers at Duke University found that after a maximum of two hours of homework, any learning benefits rapidly start to drop off for high school students. While some children will do everything to avoid doing it, at the other extreme others will become perfectionists who have to essay be persuaded to go to bed. Some moms I spoke to had to bribe their children to do less! Given the cloud of on experience, anxiety hovering over them, no wonder some of these children perceive education as stressful.

Perhaps fewer parents would go down the path of high performance parenting if they realized how much resentment it creates in their children. The irony is 25 worst essay that all this obsession with pushing our kids towards success, pushes away the montaigne essays on experience summary, very people we are trying to help. While all of us would say we love our children no matter what, unfortunately that’s not the message our kids hear. Instead, children become angry when they feel we are turning them into passive projects. Rather than feel like they are disappointing us, they disconnect. Early signs may be they become uncommunicative after school, stop looking parents in the eye, secretive or avoidant. But we need to remember that unhappy stressed kids don’t learn.

Over the next few years, Lily’s insistence on not doing homework kept getting worse. To try and get to the bottom of individual, it, my husband Anthony and I took her to see educational psychologist who found strong cognitive scores and no signs of montaigne, learning difficulties. But what the report did identify was how profoundly Lily’s self-worth had been affected. Even though I had never once told her she should be top of the class, she still felt she had to be good at everything. If she couldn’t be, she didn’t think there was any point trying at all. It was clear despite our best efforts to support her, Lily constantly felt criticized. She was becoming defensive and resentful. Most serious of all, by claiming she couldn’t do her homework – when she could – she was testing if my love for her was conditional on her success. I had to face up to the painful truth that unless I took immediate action – and killed off my inner Tiger Mom – my child and I were growing apart. When her tutor rang to august tell me Lily needed a break, I was delighted to agree. On Experience Summary? Since then, I have let her focus on the subjects that really matter to her – art and music – and have let her decide what direction to take them in.

I also made a deliberate effort to spend time with Lily – just the exemplification essay, two of us – so we can simply “be” together. Now instead of montaigne summary, trips to the museums and classical concerts, we go for exemplification walks in the park and montaigne essays on experience, hot chocolates. Unfortunately, over 25 worst, the years, an inner critic had grown up inside Lily’s head that kept telling her she was not good enough. I realized I needed to take quite deliberate steps to address that if she was to be happy with herself again. To help her recognize and dismiss the voice that was bringing her down, I took her to see a Neuro-Linguistic Programming coach who teaches children strategies to montaigne essays untangle the persistent negative thoughts that undermine their self-belief – and replace them with positive ones. Before we began, Jenny explained that Lily’s issues are not uncommon. As a teacher of 30 years experience, Jenny believes the growing pressure on children to perform from an early age is contributing to a general rise in learning anxiety. The youngest child she has helped was six . It’s children like Lily, who don’t relish a contest, who are among the exemplification, biggest casualties. At home, some have been made to feel they are not good enough by montaigne essays on experience summary, parents or are intimidated by more academic sisters and exemplification essay, brothers. Montaigne On Experience? Some may develop an inferiority complex simply because they are born into high-achieving families. Once established, failure can also become self-reinforcing.

Even when they get good marks, children like Lily still dwell on the pupil who got the german on work, higher one to support their negative views of their abilities, making it a self-perpetuating downward spiral. It’s when children start to see this self-criticism as fact that the negative self-talk can start. As she sat on the sofa, Jenny asked Lily if she had ever heard a nagging voice in her head that put her down. Lily looked surprised but answered that yes, she had. Asked who it was, my daughter replied: “It’s me, but the mean me.” Asked to montaigne essays summary draw this character, Lily depicted an angry, disapproving female figure with her hands on exemplification essay, her hips, with a mouth spouting the words “blah, blah, blah.” When asked to montaigne on experience summary name her, Lily thought for strindberg a moment before coming up with the essays on experience summary, name Miss Trunch-Lily, so-called because the writing help uk, figure is essays on experience half herself – and half the hectoring teacher from Roald Dahl’s Matilda. Now Miss Trunch-Lily had been nailed, Jenny and exemplification essay, Lily agreed an easy way to deal with her would be to talk back and tell her “Shut up, you idiot” one hundred times. But that would take a long time, so Lily and Jenny came up with a quicker solution; imagining a canon which would instantly send a shower of 60 candies into essays summary, her mouth so she couldn’t say another word. Next time Lily heard her nagging voice, all she had to 25 worst essay analogies do was press an imaginary button and her nemesis would be silenced. In the months that followed, Lily seemed to relax.

Gradually the procrastination about homework started to vanish – and Lily was much more likely to open her books after school and quietly get on montaigne summary, with her homework. We have recently come back from a week in a seaside cottage with no Internet or phone signal. There was no homework, no extra workbooks to do, no music exams to prepare for. Individual Rights Essay? Nor did we use our vacation as a catch-up period to prepare the montaigne, girls to get ahead. Instead my husband, my daughters and I went on long walks with our dog. 25 Worst Analogies? We examined different types of montaigne essays on experience summary, seaweed and examined crabs in rock pools. Back in on work experience the cottage, we sat around and read books that interested us. I let the children play upstairs for hours, not on essays on experience, their phones, but in long elaborate role-plays, without feeling the need to writing help uk interrupt once.

I would wager that Lily and Clio learnt more about themselves – and essays on experience, what they are capable of – in a single week than in a whole semester at their schools where they hardly get a moment to stop and think. When I talk about my journey of being a slow parent, I often find that other parents look shocked – particularly those who firmly believe they are responsible for making their children into the successes they are. Writing Help Uk? So, I shared my journey in montaigne essays on experience the book Taming the Tiger Parent: How to put your child’s well-being first in a competitive world . Of course, for the child born with a go-getting personality, teaming up with turbo-charged parents can be a winning combination – to start with at writing help uk least. But as adults, we have to start asking – how high we can raise the bar before it’s too high for montaigne on experience summary our children to jump? After all, a bigger picture is 25 worst analogies also emerging: a rise in anxiety disorders, depression and self-harm among children who have grown up with this continual pressure – and the emergence of a generation who believe they are losers if they fail, they’ve never done enough if they win. Even among children who succeed in essays this environment, educationalists are finding pushy parenting creates a drive towards perfectionism which can turn into self-criticism when these young people can’t live up to such high standards. I’m happy that in the midst of essays experience, this arms race to push our kids more and essays summary, more, there are changes afoot.

Around the world, parents and educators are drawing up a blue-print for an alternative. Whether it’s slow parenting, minimalist parenting, free-range parenting – or the more bluntly named Calm the F*** Down parenting, there is recognition that we need to writing help uk resist the impulse to montaigne essays on experience constantly push and micro-manage. As a mother to Lily, as well as my younger daughter, Clio, I’ve decided I don’t want to be a part of on work, all those crushing burdens of montaigne on experience summary, expectations. I want to provide a relief from it. Apart from the fact it makes children happier, it’s also so much more fun. Now I love the fact that when Lily messes around in the kitchen making cupcakes, I no longer have to essay trust fight the urge to tell her to hurry up – and montaigne essays on experience, badger her to finish her homework. Of course, not doing homework is not an option – but these days in our house the aim is to do it as quickly and efficiently as possible.

If a concept is not understood, I don’t pull my hair out trying to strindberg essay be the teacher and trying to play ‘catch-up’. If Lily, now 12, genuinely does not understand it, I write a note to the member of the staff to explain that it may need further explanation. It’s a simple system and is working perfectly fine for us. I like it that when she comes home from school, and I ask her, ‘How are you?’ I really mean it. It’s no longer code for: ‘What marks did you get today, darling?’ and I’m not thinking ‘Hurry up with your answer, so we can get on with your homework.’

Most of all I love the fact that I can finally appreciate Lily for the person she is now– a 12-year-old girl with an acerbic sense of on experience, humor who likes Snoopy, play-dates and rights essay, kittens – and not for the person I once wanted her to be. Ask yourself what do you want for your children? When you say you want your children to be happy, what has that come to essay mean to summary you? If you really analyze it, has it drifted into being interpreted as professional success and financial acumen?

If you look around you, what do the happiest people you know have in common? Is it material goods, high-flying jobs and academic qualifications? Or is it emotional balance? Her latest book Taming the Tiger Parent: How to put your child's well-being first in a competitive world has been called a big picture book to analogies ‘re-orientate our parenting’, ‘highly readable’ ‘well-researched’ and ‘ beautifully written’ by teachers, parents and professionals. The book has received global coverage from outlets ranging from the NBC Today Show to the New York Post to yahooparenting, the Guardian and dailymail.online. Her seventh book 'Girls Uninterrupted - A manual for raising courageous daughters' - will be published in montaigne essays on experience summary February 2015. This is interesting to writing help uk me because it doesn’t match our experience at all. Montaigne On Experience Summary? We are struggling with my daughter doing homework, but it’s more of an trust adolescent rebellion/lethargy thing.

My kids attend a Montessori school which generally does not assign homework. What homework they tend to montaigne summary get in the elementary levels is a packet of assorted reading and math that they have an entire week to individual do at whatever pace works for them. My son’s homework is essays summary optional and he always opts out. 25 Worst Analogies? (He’s very busy at home drawing and playing piano and essays, he’s already reading at a high school level in second grade, so we never worry about academics with him anyway.) But my oldest is in seventh grade and they are trying to transition the kids into what will happen in high school, and german essays experience, my daughter has balked at all the homework. But we have never approached our kids’ homework as our responsibility. We are always available to help and montaigne essays on experience, answer questions, but I explain that I passed whatever grade they are in essays on work already, and on experience, this is individual their turn to montaigne essays on experience learn and show what they know. It’s been much harder clamping down on my oldest and making sure she knows what the essay, homework is and has it ready. I explained to her recently that I remember those rebellious feelings, but the only person she’s hurting is herself. Essays On Experience? She’s limiting her choices later by not doing homework. Her teachers care, but in the end it doesn’t impact them, either.

It’s all on her. I also told her the trust, worst case scenario is essays on experience summary she ends up at writing help uk the local high school by default instead of following her friends to better places, but that the local high school is good too, so it’s not the montaigne, end of the world. I actually worry when I read about other parents monitoring elements of their kids’ lives so much more closely than I do that I’m not doing enough, but my kids are smart and essay trust in a relationship, happy and montaigne essays, kind and I think they will do fine in the world, so I suppose we will stick with what we are doing. Rights Essay? Because all of us are getting some part of it wrong, regardless. Sumitha Bhandarkar says. Thanks so much for sharing that perspective, Korinthia. Montaigne Essays? I love your calm and collected approach to everything parenting, so I’m not entirely surprised with the way you approach home work #128578; That said, in the circles I hang out, very few parents (if any) would be as calm about this as you are! I don’t know if it has anything to essay about do with the fact that most of us are first generation immigrants and montaigne essays on experience summary, are quite fanatic about education…

Even among our friends, we are a bit of an extreme case. Our daughter goes to a private school. Experience? She’s had to do daily homework on weekdays (Mon – Thu) since Kinder. We did have some initial resistance, but it’s mostly a well-established habit now. When she comes home, we take a short break, and then she sits down for homework while I get dinner ready. Most of the montaigne on experience summary, days, it happens without any issues. Some days, she tries to individual rights essay change the rules by essays on experience, wanting to play before homework.

I understand her want to do that, but having come from a middle class family in a developing country, my perspective on this is very different. Individual Rights? We are where we are, quite literally, due to the discipline we had in essays summary regards to essay about in a relationship education. That discipline is a very powerful thing and like many things the on experience, earlier you get it instilled the easier it is. I see it as my job to instill that discipline in my daughter. What she wants to do with it when she grows up is august strindberg up to her. Summary? (In my own case, I’ve shelved a Ph.D to be a stay-at-home mom now and pursue what I really want to do. But that’s been possible only because my degree allowed me to get a high-paying job where I was able to save enough that I don’t have to worry about money for a few years. In those years, if I can find a way to earn a modest income from about trust in a relationship this site without selling my soul, great. If not, I’ll go back to my old job and repeat the cycle. It’s an amazing freedom to have!) Anyway, so to me, it boils down to this: this is another case of the intricate balance we parents have to strike — we need to nudge our kids to summary reach their full potential, but without making it stressful and hopefully in a way that they actually enjoy the process. About Relationship? It’s not easy, and like you I wonder sometimes if I’m making the right choice.

And here, I’ll defer to your wise words, because I can’t say it any better — my [daughter is] smart and happy and kind and I think will do fine in the world, so I suppose we will stick with what we are doing. Because all of montaigne, us are getting some part of it wrong, regardless. #128578; I’m endlessly fascinated with how many ways there are to do things as a family. And it’s always interesting to know what others think of analogies, as normal. I guess for us it comes down to the idea that learning is important, but grades are not. I had a horribly unfair incident in college concerning a grade, and I remember my grandmother smiling and saying, “No one ever asks me what my GPA was.” And it’s true. MIT was threatening to withhold my brother’s Master’s Degree over a deadline on a signature he had nothing to do with, and he just shrugged it off and said, “They can’t take back what I learned.” (They did finally give him his degree, but he really didn’t care.) Grades don’t really mean much.

A “B” for one student may be a mark of a lot of effort, and evidence of slacking off for montaigne essays another. I’m more interested in what my kids actually know. I think that’s why Montessori has been such a good fit for trust us. Essays Summary? They teach to the individual, they don’t give letter grades, and essay, there is no sense of competition, only montaigne on experience summary, striving to learn more about the world. We know by comparison to other schools around the 25 worst analogies, city that ours is one of the highest performing, so we feel confident that they are getting a good education, but it’s their education, not mine. Maybe because I grew up in essays a family of artists?

We were always busy, always making things and august essay, learning something new. That’s what I want for montaigne essays my kids. German Essays On Work? I like that they are never bored, and that they LOVE school. They love it. They pretend not to be sick when they have a cold just so they can go. Montaigne Essays On Experience Summary? I guess in my mind that’s what school should be. Someplace to be excited about. Sumitha Bhandarkar says.

It is fascinating, isn’t it? I think the way we grow up, and what we have experienced, colors the writing help uk, lens through which we see the world. I agree with you that at the end of the montaigne on experience, day, learning, and the love of learning, are more important than everything else. I think differently about grades though. Grades to me, are a reflection of how well you can apply that learning. Knowledge by itself isn’t enough.

You need to essay be able to apply it in some way – either to montaigne essays on experience earn a living, or help make the world a better place, or whatever. For kids, getting good grades are a way to practice applying/expressing their knowledge… it’s a very narrow and exemplification, imperfect way to do it, but it’s what we have, nevertheless. And, I look at absolute grades… not relative ones. In other words, I don’t care how many other kids did better or worse than her in any given test… I’m interested mainly in summary what she did or didn’t do well. Just like us, she will sometimes be successful in applying that knowledge. August Strindberg Essay? Sometimes, not as much.

The question then is, what can I do to help her better retain what she has learnt and apply it more effectively? Now, if her grades aren’t good because of something outside her control, she is off the summary, hook. If not, we hold her accountable, and work on 25 worst analogies, it together to try and figure out what she can change/improve to do better next time. So far, this seems to have worked and montaigne, I haven’t beat the joy of learning out of her, yet #128578; But, we’re still at the beginning of her learning journey… we’ll have to see what happens as we go along and essay, things get more demanding and more complex… PS: This is one of the montaigne essays on experience, more interesting discussions I’ve had on this blog in a while — Thank you! #128578; Thanks for the very considered and calm discussion of writing help uk, this issue that is on experience happening here. This piece is 25 worst essay not about Lily so much as it is about how great it can be when we parents discard our baggage and come to our children afresh.

My book Taming the montaigne on experience, Tiger Parent has been called ‘a book to re-orientate’ parenting – and really it is about one thing: Finding empathy and connection with our children without letting the world (which does not always want the best for our kids) to get in the way. Individual Rights? Please share so that we get other parents have the confidence to do the same – and enjoy their parenting more..(and that’s just the adults!) Sumitha, I’m probably biased about grades because my own history with them has been so unrepresentative, and I think people place too much stock in them. In my kids’ school they work on preparing a portfolio of all kinds of work rather than relying on letter grades, and that works better for us. But as far as using grades simply as a barometer of whether a child is taking care of on experience summary, responsibilities that seems completely reasonable. That’s one of the discussions I’m continually having with my daughter at the moment, that she needs to provide evidence for her teachers that she’s done the work.

She feels the magic of writing help uk, a book, for instance, is essays summary marred by her picking it apart for writing help uk an analysis. Montaigne? She’ll read the book, and she’s a good writer, but she resents the type of exemplification, work assigned about it and sometimes won’t do it. (I used to do the same thing, so I get it.) I tell her she just has to essays on experience pick her consequence. About Trust? She can either suck it up and do the work, challenge the work by coming up with a different assignment that maybe meets the same criteria the montaigne summary, teachers are interested in, or not do it. 25 Worst? The first two improve her report card, and the third hurts it. The report card is essays on experience a means to individual more choices about her future. (As her mom, I’m actually just happy she read and loved the book.) In the end, I’m not worried. For her, bad grades at a good school are probably worth more than good grades at a bad school, and she will still have more choices than the average child. Wherever she ends up she will make it work, but that’s up to her. I acknowledge we are in on experience summary a privileged position, because she’s got enough talent and on work experience, charm and resources and family that she will not starve, she will not be homeless, regardless of grades. I think the real key to success is figuring out your passion if you can, so you know what you’re working toward. As soon as she figures that out I’m convinced she has the skills and discipline to build a good life for montaigne herself.

I did. (And my report cards would have given you a panic attack!) Sumitha Bhandarkar says. I have to agree with you and your daughter about the book reports — we did our first one a few weeks back, and strindberg essay, it was decidedly much more unpleasant compared to just reading and enjoying the montaigne on experience summary, book! Good luck convincing your daughter to exemplification essay pick one of the montaigne on experience, first two consequences. But it is clear that even if she picks the third you’ll take it in your stride — which is what I find so admirable about you #128578; Such an interesting discussion, thank you!

One more piece to toss in there if you have time for it: I know it’s an article about practicing music, but it’s the same idea about grades as a reward, and how that backfires. I think for me it’s not that grades are not important, it’s that they should reflect something real. If my kids are learning and writing help uk, working hard, the essays, grades will follow. About Trust In A? But their focus should always be on their education, not their grades. That is particularly true in essays on experience summary music where racing from one music grade to the next, as kids do here, can destroy enjoyment of music for individual essay its own sake – and that is montaigne a very sad. It just becomes about teaching to the test. In my view children should have music as another language – and another outlet for emotion, not just as a way to build CVs. Well said. Couldn’t agree more. Sumitha Bhandarkar says.

@Korinthia, sorry for the late reply — busy with the holidays. Love that article you pointed to. Some time back, I came across several articles by Alfie Kohn and got very confused about this whole rewards thingie. At that point I was just starting to move away from threats, punishment and screaming, and thought I was doing good by essay, using rewards and positive reinforcement instead, and Kohn’s articles turned that notion on it’s head. Things eventually started to fall in place when I read the montaigne summary, “Power of Habits” by Charles Duhigg. My very unsubstantiated, unproven, non-scientific conclusion (which I wrote about here) is based on this observation mentioned in that article — Kohn and his colleagues would admit that rewards, bribes and praise do indeed work in the short term — and Chales Duhigg’s observations that once a habit is formed, you can remove the reward completely from the about trust, habit loop and the habit will continue. So in my opinion, if you use rewards as a way to montaigne essays on experience establish a habit and not as the end result, they still have a place. In the essay, case of grades for instance, grades are a way to get into a consistent study habit which is — pay attention in on experience class, learn what the teacher is teaching, review at home if necessary, let’s talk about individual rights it as much as you want or you can look things up in summary books/Net, apply in a test. At 1st grade it’s very hard to make learning *all* subjects fun, but a habit like this will apply to all subjects universally. Grades are a great way to get that habit started initially — they are tangible and there is rights recognition. As we go on, we focus the montaigne essays summary, message on the learning — for instance, like me, grammar was not my daughters favorite subject.

By looking at the test results and saying “Hey, you did well in your grammar test. You’re learning a lot for a first grader! What is this you’ve done here? Diagramming? We never did that in India.

Will you teach me how to diagram a sentence?” implicitly acknowledges the exemplification essay, grade on that test, but the grade isn’t the montaigne essays on experience, focus. Strindberg Essay? When she draws on her white board and teaches me how to diagram a sentence, there is pride and joy in her and now she is a lot more interested in grammar. I am not a music person (I know, sorry :)) but I would think that using a reward to get a child to montaigne essays on experience practice until the child’s first performance isn’t a bad idea. Once the child performs in front of an audience, and exemplification, enjoys that sense of accomplishment, the practice habit will likely carry through, even if you remove whatever temporary reward you used. If the child has an montaigne on experience inclination towards music, they will learn to enjoy the strindberg essay, practicing part of it too as they go along — it’s just a matter of getting them to do it for montaigne on experience long enough to recognize that. Sumitha Bhandarkar says. @Korinthia, I’m still thinking about it #128578;

The latest discussion reminded me about the marble jar experiment you shared on your blog some time back (here). At first your kids may have done the chores to earn those marbles to rights get the screen time or other things (rewards). Essays On Experience? But once the 25 worst, system (habit) was established, the marbles (or the things they could buy) is not necessarily a motivator to do the montaigne essays on experience summary, chores… it is “just how things are done” — a simple habit/system that removes the august strindberg, need for verbal negotiation, arguing, reminders, cajoling, power struggles etc from the picture and hence makes what needs to be done tolerable/fun for everyone involved. To be honest on music, I think you also know your child is playing the montaigne summary, right instrument when they do want to practice. I know that sounds idealistic but they will be much drawn towards that instrument if it’s the essay trust in a, one that lights their ‘spark.’ Lily and Clio both do play the essays on experience, violin to a very high level – but as I explain in my book, that doesn’t mean I have had been to be an Amy Chau tiger parent to writing help uk get to them point. Also music has become a way of life in our house, and they play music together, which helps. (Sorry to keep this discussion dragging on montaigne essays summary, forever, but it’s the strindberg essay, kind of thing I really enjoy!) Sumitha, I agree about essays on experience summary using some rewards for essay forming habits. When my kids first started violin we got into summary, a routine of about in a, combining practice with dessert. We don’t often have dessert, but to montaigne on experience summary get them in a habit of practicing after dinner they would get marshmallows for each little thing they played.

Then just at the end of the practicing. Then not at all and they didn’t notice. They were four and six at the time and that helped because it was easier to catch their attention with marshmallows than with some abstract sense of musical improvement, which on violin is painfully slow. The hardest part about teaching beginning violin is to keep students essentially distracted from the fact that they don’t sound like anything for german essays on work experience a long, long time, while they put in the necessary work that will improve how they sound. Essays? I used to use small stickers with my students to mark when songs were done, but it wasn’t much of a reward. Rights? My kids’ violin teacher uses toys and essays summary, candy as incentives week to exemplification essay week, and I can see how it backfires. It takes the montaigne essays on experience, focus off the writing help uk, work and onto the treat, and not getting the treat feels like punishment. Montaigne Summary? My son’s piano teacher doesn’t even use stickers–just checks things off so he knows not to writing help uk keep working on them, and that’s working much better, but there is montaigne on experience summary a lot more instant gratification to german on work experience piano than there is to violin.

In terms of grades, we just view them differently. Montaigne Essays On Experience Summary? They tell such an incomplete story that they don’t interest me much. You know a little something if a kid gets all good grades vs. all bad grades, but beyond that, nothing useful. When I was in about relationship 7th grade I had a notoriously sexist shop teacher who would NOT give a girl an essays on experience summary A in mechanical drawing. On Work? I know my first drawing in that class was better than the boy’s sitting next to me, but he got all A’s. I complained to montaigne summary my mom who told me when she was in college absolutely no woman could get an A in her advertising class, and essay, she was far and away the best artist there. (Also, some agencies flat out did not hire women, which still blows my mind.) I got alternating A’s and failing grades in reading in essays on experience summary 6th grade based purely on whether I handed in the assignments. The quality of the writing didn’t matter to the teacher. Would you rather hire a writer who writes well, or one who writes poorly but always meets deadlines? Depends on the need. When I think about grades I always think about the about trust in a, valedictorian from my brothers’ high school class.

One of my brothers spent his senior year at USC. He was second in his class because he got a B in montaigne essays on experience summary one of those college courses. Number one? A girl who spent all of her high school experience striving for essay perfect grades. Her brother was the valedictorian of my class, and on experience, she felt she had to match that. It was expected. Essay About Trust In A Relationship? So she took courses purely based on what she could get an A in. She did not risk taking physics, or calculus.

If as a family we were disadvantaged and that status would provide important opportunities my child wouldn’t otherwise get, then sure, that would be a worthy (if distorted) goal. Essays Summary? It’s all relative, and again, every family is analogies different.

Tanith, I agree that kids have to play an instrument that speaks to them. I wish more parents knew that. I asked him what he would rather do, and he wanted to play guitar. I told his mom I thought he should switch (or even just add it) because violin brought him no joy. His mom had a sense of “violin is better” and it was a status thing for her. She was shocked I suggest he be allowed to play guitar and said, “You think guitar is okay?” I told her there was nothing wrong with guitar, and if he liked what he was playing he would do better and enjoy it more. Glad your children like playing violin! One of my projects for the new year is to start building a full size one for my oldest and have her help. (Not many kids get to play a violin they literally had a hand in making, so that should be fun!) Sumitha Bhandarkar says. I love this discussion, too Korinthia! Thank you so much for it. Even though grades/degrees haven’t brought anything of on experience, real substance to my life, they nevertheless are the tickets that opened a lot of doors for writing help uk us and so I simply can’t bring myself to totally break free from montaigne them — but I am happy that through these discussions, I am broadening my perspective a bit and hopefully my daughter will benefit from it! About music, most Asian kids end up in piano classes by default, but my daughter didn’t quite show any interest in a play keyboard she had as a kid which I took as an german essays indication that it’s not her “thing”. I’ve talked to on experience summary her a couple of times about guitar classes — while she shows interest in it for the novelty of it, she didn’t pounce on it like when I mentioned art class. A lot of my friends argue that kids can doodle and paint at home and in a relationship, there’s no need to spend on on experience, classes, and that money is better spent on music so we can introduce something ‘new’ to our kids. I see that point, but I am a believer of the 10,000 hour rule and if she loves art, and doodling, I’d rather pay for her to 25 worst just take classes in that and essays summary, hone that craft. Again, no idea if that is writing help uk a good choice or if it will come back to bite me in the future… we’ll see #128578; I really like what you have to montaigne on experience summary say. Yes, the delays and distractions, that’s what I have here with my 9 year old. Montaigne Essays On Experience Summary? Despite our questions to the school, we never got a complete answer as to how kids were “sorted” each year into what class. Turns out they did it by testing scores and not the “mix-up” of kids to juggle things up from year to year as I was originally told years ago. Of course this created a bit of hurt pride and friction about the subject with my husband and I towards the august, school as we of course thought our child should be in with the other kids.

Even now, with a friend’s child being in the other class, there is essays a pressure for our own child to 25 worst essay analogies do better, push harder, get into that class. Luckily my husband is montaigne essays on experience more level-headed about it than me and august strindberg, this article gave me a good wake-up call. The amount of work they had was more than her class and gave me some concern as to whether she was learning enough. Not to montaigne essays summary mention the bragging she’d hear from other kids in writing help uk that class that made her feel inadequate. Not every child is going to be the next Einstein and summary, we know our daughter is a smart girl but has a stronger pull, like your Lily, toward art and other subjects. There was the 25 worst essay analogies, summer project already spread out on the last day of school, which is a bit discouraging as not all schools do it and it’s a yearly thing for us but we took it in stride. Essays Summary? I wonder if that bragging isn’t covering up insecurities or worries.

I was later told several times that our shared love of reading together helped make her a good reader, one of the better ones of her class. I think you hit on a very interesting point here. “It also made me wonder about kids that are pushed, some take it out in frustrations and others.” I have been exploring this point because I believe that one of the unacknowledged knock-on effects of competitive parenting is sibling rows and tension. The children don’t just compete to win in on experience the outside world – they do it at home too, leading to many more squabbles and less happy home.

My girls Lily and Clio, for example, have never got on better – they collaborate and help each other with music, homework etc. Yet I hear other parents proudly trumpet how they have children dead set on individual rights essay, beating each other as if they was making them excel further. Instead is sets up a template that I believe can ruin sibling relationships into adulthood. Another reason to take the foot of the gas…. Anshu Arora says. Really liked the article. Montaigne Essays?
